The Stones by Tom Lycos and Stefo Nantsou
Two boys. One mistake. No way back.
It starts as a dare. Two boys, a Sunday afternoon, pockets full of stones. By the time they reach the overpass bridge above the freeway, the game has tipped toward something they cannot see coming.
The Stones is based on a true story. In 1994, two Melbourne boys kicked rocks from a freeway overpass and killed a university lecturer driving home. The trial divided public opinion and dominated headlines, but the noise obscured something more difficult: how ordinary it all was. How close to home?
Created by Tom Lycos and Stefo Nantsou with guidance from Victorian Police officers who worked the real case, the play fictionalises the characters and weaves in similar incidents from around the world. Two actors shift between the boys and the detectives, using nothing but extraordinary physical and vocal craft.
Since its 1996 premiere, The Stones has been performed over 500 times across Australia, North America, Europe, and beyond. It remains one of the most urgent pieces of theatre made for young audiences.
