The Stones by Tom Lycos and Stefo Nantsou

Two boys. One mistake. No way back.

The Stones is a fictional re-creation of a true story. In 1994, two Melbourne boys kicked rocks from a motorway bridge, killing a motorist; they were charged with manslaughter and six separate counts of recklessly endangering life. The trial and verdict sparked public outcry and sensational media coverage, but the incidents and issues surrounding the case remained unclear. These events caught the interest of two members of Australia's Zeal Theatre, artistic director Stefo Nantsou and actor/writer/director Tom Lycos. With the assistance of Detective David Jones, who oversaw the real case, and other police officers who deal with youth crime, Lycos and Nantsou took the facts from this case, as well as other similar true stories from around Australia and overseas and wove them together into one dramatic narrative. They did not meet with the real boys or their families and respected their anonymity.

By exploring these events, The Stones seeks to examine the universality of reckless teenage behaviour rather than focusing on the details and characters of the actual case. It raises wider issues about teenage criminality and attitudes toward the law and looks at the reality of what happens to juveniles when they become involved in the criminal justice system. First performed in June 1996, The Stones has since been seen more than 500 times in Australia, Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands, including a 2003 production by Barking Gecko Arts.  In 1997, the play won Australia's NSW Frater Award for excellence in educational drama, and in 1998, it received a Drama Victoria Award for Best Secondary Production.
