In 2016 Barking Gecko begins its brand new Living Lectures program by exploring Shakespeare’s shortest and bloodiest tragedy, Macbeth.

Living Lectures are designed to provide a deep encounter with performance texts for high school teachers and students. The three-hour presentation will be conducted by Barking Gecko’s Artistic Director and former Bell Shakespeare director Matt Edgerton.

Living Lectures are an entertaining mixture of performance and interactive presentation and will include:

  •  Performances of key speeches and scenes from the play by Perth’s finest actors
  •  Critical analysis of the text
  • Discussion and demonstration of actors’ interpretation of roles, including repetition of famous passages with different readings of the text
  • Exploration of plot, theme, language, imagery and character within the text
  • Discussion of Shakespeare’s historical context and modern reinterpretation
  • An overview of the play’s performance history
  • Question and answer with students

Barking Gecko’s Living Lectures will take place at the University of Western Australia and will be an annual series of rich explorations of classic texts that students are studying.
