Matt is the Artistic Director of Western Australia’s award-winning Children’s Theatre Company, Barking Gecko Theatre. He trained at The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in acting and has spent most of his professional life as an actor and director in Sydney.
Matt is a Winston Churchill Memorial Fellow and travelled to Vanuatu and London in 2013 to study Theatre for Development. He has been nominated for the Glug award for best supporting Actor in Ensemble Theatre’s Richard III in 2014. He won the 2015 Glug Award for Best Production for Children (director) for The Unknown Soldier and the 2016 Helpmann award for Best Production for Children (dramaturg) for Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories.
For Barking Gecko, Matt has directed In a Dark Dark Wood, Living Lecture: Macbeth, Living Lecture: Romeo And Juliet, My Robot and is currently in creative development and pre production for many exciting, new shows.
As a teaching artist, Matt has worked in numerous communities nationally and internationally. This has included extensive work in juvenile justice centres, exploring theatre with the homeless and developing theatre programs through residencies in remote communities Australia-wide. Matt was the full time Resident Artist in Education at Bell Shakespeare for a number of years, working as a director, writer, dramaturg and actor, as well as creating the content for all of the company’s education programs.
