ABOUT MY ROBOT

A conversation about the nexus between science and art led to Barking Gecko Theatre’s Artistic Director Matt Edgerton reaching out to internationally respected playwright Finegan Kruckemeyer. The pair imagined a story about a girl who makes her own robot, and My Robot was born.

At its heart My Robot is a very human story. Ophelia’s family moves to the seaside from a mountain town. She feels displaced; she misses home and her friends. She feels that the pieces of her life have been jumbled up and lost in the move. She is, however, a curious inventor with a penchant for puzzle solving and on their first night in their new home discovers a box of junk pieces with a mysterious note attached that reads “YOU. MAKE. ME.”

My Robot reminds us all that we are all just made from pieces and when it feels like something is missing we can find, or make a new piece that fits just right.

Suits ages 4 – 12 and their families
Duration: 60 minutes, no interval

SYNOPSIS

When Ophelia moves with her family to the seaside, she’s not impressed. She doesn’t like the beach, misses her old home and thinks the people in this town are pretty strange. While unpacking her room she discovers a mysterious box full of gadgets, parts and pieces, and a strange note that reads ‘You. Make. Me.’ Her curiosity gets the better of her and she spends all night assembling the objects into Olivetti, a robot with a typewriter chest and an alarm clock heart. Made up of pieces, but more than the sum of her parts.

Will Ophelia be able to keep Olivetti’s true identity a secret? Will the bully, Otis, fulfil his dream of proving to Ophelia how great their seaside town is whilst at the same time trying to run her out of it? Will Orson ever overcome his allergies and manage to leave his house? Will Ms Ogilvie ever lighten up or will she be Olivetti’s downfall?

But a bigger challenge is coming – can the pair save their friend and reunite him with his mother?

My Robot reminds us that we are all made up of different parts, and that when we feel less than whole we can find – or make – a part that fits.
